Annuloplasty is a technique used to repair the fibrous tissue at the base of the heart valve. The two leaflets normally involved in sealing the valve may not function properly for various reasons. Surgical repair involves sewing sutures around the base to make the opening smaller. This creates a purse string effect around the base of the valve and helps the leaflets meet again when the valve closes. A plastic ring may be used to help support and strengthen the valve, as well as any other repair techniques that have been used.
